What are free weights?
Well, essentially, they are exactly what it says on the tin. These pieces are weights (or any other resistance item) that are free, as in they aren't attached to anything and that you can quite literally pick up and move them. These include items like medicine balls, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, and the ever-popular resistance bands.
What are the benefits of free weights?
Well, it is a come belief among gym trainers and fitness enthusiasts that the best exercises are the ones that improve your performance outside of the gym — whether that means running a half-marathon, carrying your heavy furniture, or climbing a mountain and free weights are ideal for this. The reason being that these weights allow your body to move throughout all three planes of motion so that you are moving through space as you would in your day-to-day life.
Elaborating on free weights and muscle motion, they don't just work multiple muscles at once. They make them work together, which is critical for balance and coordination. Along with this, free weights, like any other high-intensity workout, torch a lot of calories, all while reducing your risk of injury. Additionally, they are portable, easily maneuverable, and don't take up a lot of space.
But now that you are interested in pursuing free weights, how do we incorporate these items into our regimes? What would classify as a free weights workout?
Free weights workout
It just so happens that free weights are the most versatile workout tool ever. All you need are the weights and a few feet of space, and you can perform countless combinations of exercises to strengthen every single muscle in your body. Therefore, you can pretty much adjust your current workout to become a free weights workout based on your fitness goals.
For example, if your goal is upper body strength, you can add a Dumbbell to your regular curls, extensions, and presses. So they become Dumbbell hammer curls, lying dumbbell triceps extensions, and Dumbbell shoulder presses, increasing the workout's efficiency.

As previously stated, free weights are a much smaller investment of time and space than other equipment, but there are still things to consider when buying free weights. Primarily, you should consider the number of weights in the set, weight range, coating (if any), whether the dumbbells are fixed weight or adjustable, and the amount of storage space required.
